A Belly Flop Competition is a lighthearted and entertaining swimming pool contest that’s perfect for people of all ages.
This good-natured competition challenges participants to perform the most amusing and creative belly flop, resulting in loud splashes and perhaps some gasps from the audience!
Accessories or Set Up Needed
There is no extra setup needed for this competition. A pool with a diving board is recommended, but it can also be done by just jumping into the pool.
However, the pool needs to have a deep end. Any type of diving should never be done in a shallow end of a pool.
Starting a Belly Flop Competition
Participants take turns jumping into the pool and try to land as flat as possible into the pool.
The objective is to make the loudest splash and entertain the audience with your unique technique.
Setting up the Competition
Before starting the contest, determine the criteria for scoring the belly flops. Scores can be judged by splash size (how big or how small), overall creativity, and the reaction of the audience watching.
Have the same referee or judges score each participant to make it fair.
Additionally, set how many rounds each participant will jump. Scores can be added as a total or averaged over the number of jumps performed.
How the Belly Flop Competition Works
- Participants take turns jumping into the pool and performing their best belly flop. They can be as creative as possible, with flipping and turning before the splash!
- Judges and/or the audience rate each belly flop based on the predetermined criteria
- Once all participants have completed their flops, the scores are tallied, and the winner is declared
Rules to Follow
- Participants must jump or dive into the pool as similarly as possible. If a diving board is used, the starting point should be the edge of the diving board.
- Each participant is allowed only one attempt per round to perform their belly flop.
- Judges must rate each belly flop fairly and consistently based on the established criteria.
Strategy For a Good Flop
For any belly flop, being courageous is key! Let’s face it, a good belly flop may sting a little bit, but that is a small price to be crowned champ.
Participants can also stand out by focusing on creativity and originality. Adding a unique twist or flip to your flop will certainly wow the judges.
Variations to the Competition
- Introduce themed rounds, where participants must perform belly flops based on specific themes or ideas.
- Organize a team competition, where participants work together to create synchronized belly flops.
Be Safe When Diving
- Ensure the pool is deep enough for participants to jump or dive in safely. The shallow end or an above-ground pool should not be used for any diving.
- Make sure all participants are able to freely swim and dive into the deep end of a pool.
- Adult supervision is recommended for all jumpers. Belly flops can sting and cause some temporary pain if you land in the wrong spot.
Let the Flops Begin!
As you start to think about the types of belly flops you will be performing, it’s important to remember one thing: pain is temporary, but glory lasts forever!
Have fun, and may the best flop win!
