Tug of War is an exciting and energetic game that combines strength, strategy, and teamwork.

Participants split into two teams with each player trying to pull the other team across the pool using a rope. The added resistance of the water makes the game more challenging and provides a unique twist on the classic tug of war that is played on land.

Accessories or Set Up Needed

Tug of War is best played in a pool with a large shallow end so all players can firmly stand in shallower water. Above-ground pools are perfectly suitable for this game.

A long, sturdy rope is also necessary to play. A good substitute could be a safety rope that typically separates the shallow end and deep end. Just don’t use the buoys as leverage!

How To Play Tug of War

Overall, Tug of War involves two teams competing to pull the opposing team across the pool or past a designated line. Playing in the water adds an interesting element of skill and requires more balance and leverage, making it a refreshing challenge for all participants.

Setting the Gameplay

Overall, we want the game to be as fair and challenging as possible. When choosing teams, It is best to try and pick based on equal weight and strength.

For the game itself, how to win should be agreed upon beforehand. Winning a round can be determined by lines or markers in the pool that the center of the rope passes. If you want more of a challenge, instead of using the center of the rope use the last person that passes the line on the team.

Lastly, determine the number of rounds and a round time limit. This will help offset fatigue in case a round goes for too long.

Tug of War Gameplay

  • Place markers or lines in the pool or on the decking that determines a winning round
  • Position the teams evenly at opposite ends of the pool, holding the rope.
  • On the referee’s signal, both teams begin pulling the rope, trying to out-pull the opposing team
  • A round is over when a team successfully passes the designated threshold, or the round went over the time limit
  • The game is won when a team wins a predetermined amount of rounds

Rules to Follow

  • No wrapping the rope around your body or hands for extra leverage
  • Stay within the designated pool area.
  • No holding the pool sides or deck.
  • No intentionally dunking opponents underwater.

Strategy and Tips

  • Tug of war is not all about strength. Coordinate pulling by the entire team for maximum effort.
  • Designate a signal caller to communicate with the team so all members are on the same page.
  • Pull with the legs and not the upper body.
  • Adjust your position in the water for better traction and leverage.

Variations of Tug of War

  • Floating Tug of War: Play on floaties or pool noodles for added resistance and challenge. This requires all participants to be excellent swimmers if the deep end is being used.
  • Speed Games: If there are multiple teams waiting to play, implement a “sudden death” round where the first team to win a round is declared the winner

Safety Precautions to Consider While Playing

Make sure everyone follows basic pool guidelines and safety precautions when playing.

  • Ensure the pool depth is safe for all participants.
  • Consider wearing water shoes to avoid slipping and scraping the bottom of your feet
  • Use a softer rope to avoid rope burns on your hands
  • Monitor players for signs of fatigue, and take breaks when needed
